Intrusiones (Intrusions)

Upon feeling her daughter's fingers touch her chin, my brother, Daniel, began to cry. He always cried when he was scared. My mom came closer to hug him, trying to share the joy of what she mistook for tears of happiness. I locked eyes with Daniel for an instant. I imagined seeing myself blurred through the tears. On the other side of the room, still exhausted from childbirth, Mariana gestured for me to take my mom out of the room. I obeyed. She wanted to be alone with her new family: with Sofia, the newborn, and my brother, who had left a long time ago.

Anoxia (Anoxia)

The bare feet hanging down were caressing, grazing, the tiles of the room. The body swayed from side to side like a pendulum, its head floating a few centimeters above ours. My wife, Patricia, put her hand on her abdomen, squeezing the baby she carried inside while I, with a throat choked by nervous saliva, insisted to the mother that, please, she allow us to call the authorities.

La última pintura (The last painting)

There, from the horizon reddened by sulfurous gases, walks a tiny explorer, analyzing the desert terrain where soon the last great battle of his species will be fought. In the distance, flying over the area, one can hear the constant buzzing of the enemy army, also preparing to fight to the death.

I participated with my short story "Historias desde el encierro" (Stories from Confinement).

I participated with my story "Andrea":

If they asked you what superpower you would have in case there existed such a thing as we imagine them, would it be worth reading minds, contrary to what one would think? Surely it would be a good option. And if I told you that it is possible to do it through fear of words? Parallel Realities is full of stories that play as much with the reader's mind as with that of its protagonists, making them question their control over their reality and making them doubt what is real and what is not.

I participated with an Italian translation of my story "Y el perro se le quedó viendo" (And the dog stared at him):

"Often having a heart of gold is not enough to subtract oneself from a miserable life. No one looking into that face would be able to remain perplexed enough to confront our conscience, as Emilio Palomino shows us."

Amor y desamor. Lo bueno, lo malo. Deseos que omitimos, maneras de querer que no mencionamos y formas de entender el mundo que chocan con nuestra cotidianidad y el mal llamado «sentido común». Y, entretejido entre todo, la literatura como ventana para conocer, reconocer y —bien que mal— existir otro día más.

How does flattery work? Why do we consider it important to be individuals? Could our ignorance reveal more about us than our knowledge? On my Substack I explore what troubles me each week. I seek lucidity, no matter how momentary, in this chaotic symphony in which we live.

We detested the neighborhood because, apart from being cramped and old, opposite to the spaciousness and growth potential that new constructions boast, it kept in its houses and streets the memory of our families.

Winner of the Latin American Short Story Award "Edmundo Valadés" 2024.
